Why choose us for your pupillage?
What we do...
We were established in the 1950s and our Barristers have appeared in many leading cases over the decades since. They have had some of the most exciting briefs available at the Bar. Few product liability/group action cases over the last 25 years have not involved Henderson Chambers and we are have been recognised as the leading set in this area since it became a separate area of legal practice. We were there when group actions were devised in the 1980s and have been in most of the major ones since. We are therefore the natural choice to represent parties in international group action work. We represent UK and foreign multinationals facing foreign tort group actions arising out of their operations across the Globe. We don't just advise and represent clients in London, many members have travelled the world to see the location of the litigation, or to visit clients, witnesses and experts. We have heavy commercial practices involving international arbitration, IT contracts, banking and finance.
We are also the set of choice for Health & Safety work. There are few criminal trials, civil briefs or public inquiries in this field in which we have not taken a leading role. We are also renowned for our work for Government (Central and Local) and Regulatory clients. We have 8 members who regularly work for the Treasury Solicitor and have been involved in high profile and exciting work, involving national security and counter-terrorism.
We offer a full private client service from property law to employment. Our junior tenants cut their teeth in these key practice areas. We also offer niche consumer credit and protection, information technology, public procurement, finance, environment and clinical negligence advisory and advocacy services. We have always been a personal injury and clinical negligence set, and you will see the names of our members in some of the leading cases in this area.
What you will do...
You will be immersed in these diverse and exciting practice areas from the outset. Your Pupil Supervisor may be instructed in a large international group action and you will become part of the team. He or she may be acting for by an important Government client in a high profile piece of litigation and you will get a ring side seat. In your second six you will have your own clients, particularly in the public housing sector, and will have command of your practice from the beginning. We expect our pupils to be ready to take whatever comes, whether taking judgment in the Supreme Court or appearing at the last minute in a vacation hearing in the High Court when nobody else is around.
Our Junior Tenants operate in an extraordinarily diverse array of practice areas. They switch between running their own cases to being team players led by silks in long-running pieces of litigation. They are expected to develop and market their own careers from the outset. There are regular clerking and career development reviews as well as a mentoring system. We have been described as having a family or community atmosphere, and junior tenants enjoy the help and support of the more established members of Chambers. We operate an open-door policy and help and assistance with difficult points of practice and procedure can be sought, day or night. First year tenants benefit from earnings cushions and rent holidays in their first months. We are used to working in big teams on big cases and our juniors are involved from the outset.
We also encourage secondments to solicitors’ firms, in-house legal departments and public bodies like the Government Legal Department and the Financial Conduct Authority. Many junior tenants have been judicial assistants in the Supreme Court or Court of Appeal and this provides invaluable experience and long lasting judicial relationships. We also support FRU and the Bar Pro Bono Unit.
